After graduating university with an engineering degree in biotechnology from the Technical University Berlin, I pursued my scientific career and my doctoral degree in biophysics from the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. During this time, I investigated biophysical and biochemical aspects of the aggregation of the human Tau protein, a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. As a next step in my career, I joined Prof Bradley T Hyman at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston as a postdoctoral fellow and later as an instructor in neurology at Harvard Medical School. Here I learned all I know about the relevance and toxicity of the Tau protein in Alzheimer's disease and tauopathies, and together with Dr. Hyman developed several assays that allowed us to study the disease associated aggregation and propagation of Tau in the brain. Since mid 2018, I am back in my home town, Berlin, where I am heading my own research group at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), in affiliation with the Charite University hospital.
