Professor Pat Kehoe is the Gestetner Professor of Translational Dementia Research at the University of Bristol. He discovered one of the most studied risk genes of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), which is also important in blood pressure regulation. Since 2002, his group has been established as a leading name in the study of biochemical pathways associated with ACE and other vasoactive enzymes that become highly active in AD. These may explain the long-held recognition, but limited understanding, of associations between blood pressure regulation and the development of dementia, including AD. Some of the pre-clinical work that he has undertaken has now formed the basis of a number of drug repurposing clinical trials in AD.
