Kelly Mulfaul, PhD, received her doctorate from Trinity College Dublin, where she studied the role of the innate immune system in age-related macular degeneration in the laboratory of Dr. Sarah Doyle from 2014 to 2018. In 2018, Dr. Mulfaul joined the Institute for Vision Research at the University of Iowa to complete postdoctoral training under the supervision of Dr. Robert Mullins and Dr. Budd Tucker. As a postdoctoral researcher, she studied complement deposition in induced pluripotent stem cell–derived choroidal endothelial cells to gain a better understanding of the choriocapillaris susceptibility to complement early in macular degeneration. In December of 2021, Dr. Mulfaul was promoted to research scientist. Her current research focus is to understand immune changes that occur in the choroid early in age-related macular degeneration.
