Proteomic differences in normal and glaucomatous optic nerve

Principal Investigator

Project Summary

The mechanism by which the optic nerve undergoes structural and functional damage in glaucoma is poorly understood. Dr. Bhattacharya's goal is to determine the differential protein profile between normal and glaucomatous optic nerves using mass spectrometry and protein modifications. These protein changes will be studied using Western analyses and mass spectrometry. It is hoped that the identification of proteins and protein modifications may serve as markers for individuals predisposed to an increased risk of developing glaucoma. This information should provide insight into the pathologic mechanisms associated with glaucoma, and could help identify possible new drug targets for glaucoma therapy.
