Henne Holstege majored in biochemistry at the University of Leiden. She spent a year at Harvard University in Boston, where she investigated the molecular mechanisms of satiety, and the influence of genetics on this. She went on to do her PhD at the Netherlands Cancer Institute where she studied the somatic genetic aberrations associated with the development of breast cancer. After her PhD she set out to apply her knowledge of molecular genetics to the risk of development of neurodegenerative diseases. Currently, Henne Holstege is an assistant professor at the department of Human Genetics of the Amsterdam University Medical Center, and she is a staff-member of the Amsterdam Alzheimer Center. She runs an independent research section at the department of Human Genetics: Genomics of Neurodegenerative Diseases and Aging. She and the bioinformaticians in her lab are affiliated with the Delft Bioinformatics Lab, (Department of Intelligent Systems, Technical University Delft) to be up to date with state-of-the-art bioinformatics techniques. Her lab currently includes 2 research staff, 1 postdoc, 6 PhD students, 4 research assistants, and there is a continuous coming and going of master students. The main focus of her lab lies on the identification of genomic factors underlying the increased risk and the escape of neurodegenerative diseases with a focus on Alzheimer’s Disease.
